Mr. Chan, aged 90, has history of Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Hypertension (HT), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), prostate and bladder cancer.
He was presented with 2 pressure injuries located on the lateral side of right foot sized 2.88cm² & 5.75cm² respectively. Both wounds were 100% covered with eschar and existed for 1 months without progress under conventional treatment. MRSA was cultured from the wound. Patient suffered from severe pain with pain score up to 7 out of 10.
Immediate attention was required. Debridement was performed by Nu Pro wound nurse upon his first presentation in the centre. Natrox topical oxygen therapy was prescribed as soon as the infection was got under control in order to provide more than 98% of pure oxygen 24/7 for his wound to speed up wound healing.
In first two weeks of treatment, wound exudate increased significantly due to the reactivation of cells from the wound area in response to the topical oxygen therapy.
De-sloughing effect was significant with a reduction of pain from score 7 to 1. Wound bed vascularity improved remarkably with obvious size reduction in 6 weeks. Both wounds were free from biofilm and slough with encouraging progress in 10 weeks' time.
